Racing Ducks Bring Out The Crowds on Bank Holiday

It wasn’t particularly sunny, but it was definitely ‘weather for ducks!’ All 2500 ducks were backed by excited punters looking forward to winning one of the many brilliant prizes donated by generous businesses and individuals.

Selling two and a half thousand tickets before the race seemed to be a tall order, but they sold out like hot cakes. Unfortunately there were disappointed race goers who were unable to make a purchase as the ‘sorry sold out’ signs went up at both ends of the course. But there were lots of Lion’s stalls at Mansbridge and Woodmill to provide fun and entertainment for the hundreds of people who had turned up for the event.

An armada of canoeists worked hard during the race to rescue the ducks that were determined to hide in the bushes and reeds. They were also hard at work at the end, collecting up the ducks to give to the shore based crew who had to bag them up ready for next year. We would like to say a huge thank you to them for the brilliant job of duck marshalling and keeping it all flowing smoothly along the half mile course.

No race would be complete without winners prizes, and we had a fantastic range donated to us by local businesses. As not everyone was guaranteed to be at the event, names and telephone numbers were taken at the point of sale, so that we could contact the winners and arrange to get the prizes to them.

We did well for publicity this year, the Southern Daily Echo featured a piece on the Duck Race in it’s centre page. We got a live interview on Radio Solent at the unearthly hour of 06:45, athough they did say it would be repeated again later at a more civilised time. We were also able to promote the event at the Flourish sponsored ‘pop up shop’ in the Swan Centre the previous weekend.

The lucky winner of the first prize had two things to celebrate. First was a very welcome prize of £250 and second was Mr and Mrs Godfrey’s 31st wedding anniversary. Dave Bowring our Fundraising Chairman handed over the prize to the lucky couple. Well done to all our prize winners and thank you to everybody who helped make Bank Holiday Monday a very successful day.
