Lions support the elderly during lockdown

Age Concern craft packs

During the Covid19 pandemic many events and facilities have been put on hold and vulnerable groups, in particular the elderly, have been restricted to their homes. Normally Age Concern in Eastleigh would provide activities at the Railway Institute such as Table Tennis, Dancing, Fitness, Curling, Tai Chi, Singing, Computer Training and many other things to encourage members to get together.

Clearly in the current circumstances with the over 70s confined at home, Age Concern has had to consider alternative ways to engage with the elderly. One scheme that is in progress is the distribution of ‘Craft Packs’. These packs consist of puzzle books, jigsaw puzzles, paints, crayons and art materials. So far 214 of the packs have been delivered around Eastleigh.

The Lions Club of Eastleigh have supported this initiative by a donation from its community fund to enable the purchase of contents for further packs. With the risk of loneliness and isolation, the activities provide the recipients with valuable mental stimulation and help their overall wellbeing. Crafting is great for focusing the mind & reducing stress.  Very absorbing & therapeutic, but most of all it’s enjoyable. Creating artwork is fun & time flies when you’re having fun!

The Age Concern team have all been busy making weekly telephone support calls to current & former members. This has been even more important whilst the lockdown for shielding people is in force.
